• Ukraine Says Russia Shuts Down All Gas Supplies to Europe - NYTimes.com: Russia cut off gas supplies to Ukraine which sends the gas on to Europe which depends on Russia for 40 percent of its imported fuel. Europe is furious. Each side is playing the blame game but Putin did order a sharp reduction in gas flows, saying Ukraine was siphoning gas from the pipelines without paying. Falling oil/gas revenues are hurting Russia and eroding the economic strength that underpinned Putin's popularity. Putin appears to be taking a hard line trying to raise gas prices in Ukraine and perhaps create panic-buying on the international market to raise prices further. With temperatures plunging, European leaders expressed mounting concern. Some countries announced rationing for industrial customers to reserve enough heating for residential buildings. Suzuki closed an auto plant temporarily due to shortages of gas.
