• Effect Measure : A new refrigerant with a good backstory: The fact that EPA has just approved a safer and more environmentall y sound refrigerant is amazing news in itself. But the story behind this new product is even more amazing. The material, called HCR-188c, is a hydrocarbon blend of common materials (among them ethane, propane, isobutene, normal butane) that have no ozone depleting potential and very little in the way of greenhouse gas type of heat trapping. Even better, appliances require only a quarter the amount as current refrigerants (hydrochlorofl uorocarbons, HCFCs, and hydrofluorocar bons, HFCs), costs 20 cents per charge compared to 62 cents, and draw one third less power. Who is the inventor? His name is Hawaiian former auto mechanic Richard Maruya who developed it in a small home lab on his patio. He has been doggedly trying to bring this product to market for years:

• Giant microwave turns plastic back to oil - environment - 26 June 2007 - New Scientist: Global Resource Corporation uses 1200 different microwave frequencies tuned to act on specific hydrocarbons. When irradiated these specific hydrocarbons break down into diesel oil and combustible gas. Any non hydrocarbon is left behind. Large versions of GRC's machine resemble a concrete mixer. Anything that has a hydrocarbon base will be affected by this process. Copper is easily recovered from plastic coated copper wire. The results are clean copper ready for recycling plus some fuel oil and gas. 9.1 kg of ground-up tires produces 4.54 litres of diesel oil, 1.42 cubic metres of combustible gas, 1 kg of steel and 3.40 kg of carbon black.
