Only a fool, it is said, makes the same mistake twice. So chalk me up as a fool for mangling Shakespeare in 2008. He wrote ''to the manner born,'' not ''to the manor born,'' as I did twice.

Canada's forests may be adding to climate woes

Published January 2, 2009, 9:27 am, Chicago Tribune

Canada's vast forests, once huge absorbers of greenhouse gases, now add to problem VANCOUVER — As relentlessly bad as the news about global warming seems to be, with ice at the poles melting faster than scientists had predicted and world temperatures rising higher than expected, there was at least a reservoir of hope stored here in Canada's vast forests.

Canada's forests not helping environment

Published January 2, 2009, 7:41 am, Moldova.org

Canada's 1.2 million square miles of forests have turned from being carbon-absorbing aids to the environment to carbon-emitting liabilities, scientists say.Since 1999, and especially in the last five years, the forests have shifted from being a carbon sink to a carbon source, Werner Kurz, senior research scientist at the Canadian Forest Service in Vancouver, told a Chicago Tribune ...

  • Earthworm Activity Can Alter Forests' Carbon-carryin g Capabilities: Earthworms can change the chemical nature of the carbon in North American forest litter and soils, potentially affecting the amount of carbon stored in forests. Scientists want to determine the earthworms 9; effect on forest chemistry by comparing carbon composition in forests that vary in earthworm activity.
  • Rocks Could Be Harnessed To Sponge Vast Amounts Of Carbon Dioxide From Air: Scientists say that a type of rock found in the Mideast nation of Oman and other areas around the world could be harnessed to soak up huge quantities of globe-warming carbon dioxide. Their studies show that the rock, known as peridotite, reacts naturally at surprisingly high rates with CO2 and that the process could be speeded a million times with simple drilling and injection methods.

  • Role Of Soil Microbes In Global Warming Clarified: Current models of global climate change predict warmer temperatures will increase the rate that bacteria and other microbes decompose soil organic matter, a scenario that pumps even more heat-trapping carbon into the atmosphere. But a new study shows that while the rate of decomposition increases for a brief period in response to warmer temperatures, elevated levels of decomposition don't persist.
